Camping in South Australia
The Fleurieu Peninsula
Deep Creek CP
Deep Creek Conservation Park
Deep Creek Conservation Park is situated along the south coast, close to Cape Jervis. Features of this amazing park include some spectacular coastal views over the southern ocean. There are many well-marked walking trails ranging in time and difficulty. The wildlife is prolific, and bird watching here is some of the best close to the city of Adelaide. Great camping is available at 5 locations in the park. Stringbark Campground has hot showers and sheltered sites, and can be busy during the school holidays. The other grounds have no hot showers, but are still well maintained. Bookings are advised.
Newland Head Conservation Park
Newland Head is a popular place for surfers and there is often an excellent swell on the beach here. Tent sites are available at the camp ground located behind the dunes. If you are interested in birds, it is one of the places where you might see rare sea birds during rough weather from the Head, which is quite a long beach walk to the east of the camping area.
Rapid Bay Camping Reserve
Situated right on the beach front at Rapid Bay, this camp ground is very popular during the summer holidays. The Rapid Bay jetty offers very good fishing, and is also one of Australia's best jetty dives. Toilets are provided in the camping area, but there are no showers and only limited shade.
There are many wonderful places to camp on Kangaroo Island. Flinders Chase National Park on the western end of the island has camp grounds that are well maintained, in a number of locations. You can put up your tent in style near the visitor centre at Rocky River where there are hot showers and fresh rainwater for drinking. It is suitable for caravans and camper-trailers. Snake Lagoon is an attractive, sheltered campground with limited facilities, while at West Bay the sites are near the beach for easy access. Outside of Flinders Chase, camping areas are available at Murray Lagoon, and along the eastern coastline in Cape Gantheaume. You can also camp at Western River Cove and Stokes Bay on the north side of the island.
